My sister and I met Bill after seeking refuge in a Dunkin Donuts at 18th and Oregon during a terrible storm in the spring of 2011. There were a few other people in there --- a couple of women, some young boys at a table, an older man at a table. The boys were entertaining -- making jokes -- and answering the older man's questions about the Phillies game.

My sister and I eventually started a conversation with the man. We talked about religion, our families, you name it. We were in awe of this brilliant man -- a master of language and a bottomless well of knowledge. In our conversation with him about religion and our father's Greek heritage, it comes up that he had never been to St. George's Cathedral on 8th & Locust. I tell him that I'm getting married there in a few months on October 1, 2011 and that he should come to the ceremony.

A couple of months later in July, we ran into Bill again in the Melrose Diner. We talked for a few minutes and he let us know that he knew who our grandmother was AND it turned out that we have cousins in common. We marveled at this. Before parting ways, I told him again to come to my wedding in October.

On October 1, 2011, the day my husband and I were married, we walked down the aisle after the ceremony and I look over and there was Bill. There he was standing in celebration with us. My wedding photographer caught the look on my face when I saw Bill and it's one of my favorite photos from that day.

How often are we invited somewhere and we just don't go? Here was a man who barely knew me and months later, he remembered to come to my wedding. Although I never knew Bill well and only met him less than a handful of times, his spirit has left a impact on me and I often think of him fondly.

My condolences to all of Bill's loved ones. May he rest in peace.
