Obituary for Sarah L. Peters

Born September 2, 1974, in Vinal Haven, Maine, Sarah was a free spirit from the very beginning.  Growing up in Norway, she loved exploring the outdoors with her friends by building snow forts and tree houses, fishing, skiing and hiking, foraging berries and mushrooms, and inventing the many imaginary worlds that were inspired by all of the books she devoured so ferociously as a child.

As a unique individual with a strong sense of self from a young age, she excelled in school because of her fierce intellect, considerable charisma, and self-confidence, which was also widely admired by her peers, who also appreciated her willingness to defend those who could not defend themselves. Though she did not emphasize it herself, she was also an accomplished athlete who was recognized on multiple occasions for her skills on the slopes, fields, and courts of her youth.

After moving to America with her family and graduating from Bloomsburg High School and Bloomsburg University, she moved to New York City to pursue her lifelong dream of becoming an artist.  Working at the Museum of Modern Art in Manhattan during the day, she lived a bohemian life-style in Brooklyn associating with other aspiring artists, creating mixed medium pieces, and exhibiting her works with her friends in various shows around the city.

Following an extended trip to Europe to teach English in Germany and exploring the many wonders of Europe from Paris to Athens, she returned to Bloomsburg to earn a graduate degree in instructional technology from her alma mater, which eventually landed her a job in Philadelphia.  While living in the city, she met her wife Ali and, though their relationship did not last, it led to the birth of her daughter Alice, whom she loved deeply.

Having struggled with her health recently, Sarah passed away peacefully surrounded by her family on April 2, 2023, at Jefferson Hospital in Philadelphia. She is predeceased by her parents Dr. Francis (Frank) J. Peters and Robertine (Teena) A. Peters.  She is also survived by her daughter Alice Robertine Peters and former wife Alexandra (Ali) Tomich; brothers Francis (Chip) J. Peters, Dr. Nicholas (Nick) S. Peters, and Michael (Mike) R. Peters; nephew Ian A. Peters; nieces Lucy and Emma Peters; and sisters-in-law Shari Peters and Laurie Pierce.  Per Sarah’s wishes, the family will be scheduling a celebration of life this spring.
