Obituary for Mary Meyers (Campione)

MEYERS, MARY (FORMERLY CAMPIONE)

Age 95 of Westmont, New Jersey, daughter of Asunta and Rosario Campione, passed peacefully on Sunday evening, October 11, 2020. Born in Philadelphia on July 15, 1925, she was the youngest of six siblings (Angelo, Tony, Myrna, Tina and Josephine). They all lived at 1130 Mifflin Street in South Philadelphia at one time or another. At age 16 she met the love of her life and future husband John Meyers at a dance. She waited faithfully for John for two and a half years while he was in the Pacific Theatre during WWII. Upon his return from the war, they were married on June 8, 1946 and started their family with the birth of their first child 11 months later. She continued living at 1130 Mifflin Street for 9 years with her husband, sun and mother Asunta- “Little Grandmom.” Mary and John then moved to Westmont, New Jersey in 1955 and her family grew to four children Rudolph “Rudy” Meyers- 1947 (Beverly), Darlene Schofield – 1956 (Rick), John R. Meyers- 1957 and Sandra “Sandy” Dintino- 1965 (Tom). She loved her home at 506 E. Cuthbert Blvd. in Westmont and celebrated her 55th Wedding Anniversary to John while living there. She loved cooking for the family and hosted most of the Christmas, Thanksgiving and Family Birthday Dinners in her lovely dining room for many years serving homemade gravy (tomato sauce) ravioli, meatballs, sausage and braciola. Also, turkey dinners with all the trimmings and roasted potatoes, peppers and eggs, beef stew, and of course pizzas from King of Pizza and homemade Cheese Cakes with Anchovies sprinkled with 10X sugar! She loved driving her brand new 1960 White Ford Falcon ferrying her children to school, Baker Lanes, Ice House Skating Rink and Crystal Lake and Roberts Park Pools. She continued her “taxi duties” for her grandchildren to their many activities as well as child care whenever she was needed. Her almost daily trips to the Acme kept the fridge topped off with the freshest of fruits, vegetables and lunchmeat as well as “the good provolone”, fresh Italian rolls and black olives; and the freezer was packed with Carvel Ice Cream Products and other frozen treats. She kept her home immaculate, always with the comforting aromas of home cooked meals as well as the sounds of Sinatra playing on the family “Hi-Fi”. Her tomato plants were huge! Surviving her husband by 19 years Mary stayed strong as a Mom, Mom-Mom and Nonna for her family. Also surviving her are her grandchildren Stacy, Heather, Melissa, Derek, Corinne, Daniel, David and Samantha and great grands Amelia, Carter, Chloe, Ella, Hayden, Hunter and Jocelyn. She was the Family Matriarch with her own unique style, humor and courage. She never spoke ill of anyone, or anyone of her. She will be deeply missed, honored and lovingly remembered by her family. She will rest with her husband, and her siblings and their spouses at Calvary Mausoleum in Cherry Hill – just “up the road” from her beloved Cuthbert Blvd Home.
