Obituary for Madeline J. Calvano (Barbieri)

Madeline J. Calvano (nee Barbieri) passed away peacefully on January 2, 2021 surrounded by her loving family. Beloved wife of the late Sebastian J.; Loving Mother of Stephanie (Daniel) Ferriola, Sebastian Jr. (Lynda), Lydia (David) Kartachak, Anthony (Bernadette), Michael (Carol), and Philip (Nina); Survived by her 16 loving grandchildren, 14 great-grandchildren, and many nieces and nephews. She was predeceased by her siblings Philip, Albert, Lydia, Mario, and Nicholas Barbieri, and Mafalda Peters.

Madeline loved spending time with her large family and was happiest with a baby in her arms. She was an excellent cook and used those skills to feed everyone she welcomed into her home, whether they were hungry or not. Once the cooking was done, the cards came out and she tried her best to win at poker or pinochle, but always gave back the money she won. Her grandchildren fondly remember her as “Grams,” the funny, feisty woman with the adventurous spirit who was always happy to play with them or take a trip to the casino.

Madeline was a natural caretaker and spent many years caring for the people in her life, including nursing her father, sister, and husband through serious illnesses. She was known for her generous spirit and was always willing to help a neighbor in need or find room for them at the table. Madeline loved to laugh and experience new things with her family, whether that be digging for gold in Alaska, shooting a bow and arrow, or staying up all night in Vegas. Her kind smile will always be remembered by everyone she met.

Relatives and friends are invited to her viewing SATURDAY January 9th from 9:30am to 10:30am at St. Joseph Catholic Church, 3255 Concord Rd. Aston, PA 19014. Funeral Mass to follow viewing at 10:30am. Entombment at New St. Mary’s Cemetery, Bellmawr, NJ.
