Obituary for Guong Minh Tran

Guong Tran, a beloved husband, father, grandfather, and great-grandfather, passed away on Tuesday, March 14, 2023 at the age of 93, surrounded by his loved ones.

Born in 1930, Guong immigrated by boat with his family to the United States in 1975 after the fall of Saigon. He worked tirelessly as a baker at Dunkin' Donuts during the graveyard shift and as a high school French teacher during the day to support his wife and family of 10 children. Despite his busy schedule, he remained committed to his faith, and this love for God, and his family inspired him to achieve great things. He was the epitome of a gentleman.

Guong's dedication to his family and community was impeccable. Along side with his wife Xuan Lieu, they opened the first Vietnamese restaurant in Philadelphia in 1977, sharing his culture and cuisine with the community. He was active within his community and worked as a social worker helping other Vietnamese refugees settle in Philadelphia while providing them with the support and resources they needed to succeed.

Throughout his life, Guong remained a devout Catholic and his faith was a source of strength and inspiration for those around him. He attended Mass regularly and was a role model of Christian virtues, including kindness, compassion, and forgiveness. His love for God and his family was evident in everything he did and he touched the lives of many with his selflessness and generosity.

He is the beloved husband of 70 years to Xuan Lieu, devoted father of 10 children, beloved grandfather of 27 grandchildren, and great-grandfather of 17 great grandchildren. His legacy will continue to inspire others to love and serve with a generous and kind heart. May he rest in peace in the loving arms of his Lord and Savior.
