Obituary for Franklyn Margasak

Franklyn Margasak passed away from COVID-19 on March 27, 2020 at the age of 80, after a long struggle with dementia and other ailments. He is survived by three children and five grandchildren.

For the past five years, Frank was a resident of Renaissance Healthcare and Rehabilitation in West Philly, where he was both the bane of his caretakers’ existence and a bottomless source of comedic asides, compliments and anachronistic courtesies. During these last years, Frank’s humanity was never more evident. He showed flashes of gratitude and concern for the nursing home staff, residents, and his family. In declining health, Frank grew as a human being.

Frank was trained and worked as an illustrator, whose struggles to remain relevant and active in his field ended only with his passing. He was a Philly sports fan, a film buff, and a fabulist, whose inventions were too often destructive. At his core, he tended an inferno of self-doubt, fear and rage. The fire is extinguished now, and the world is not a better place for it. Frank will be missed.

A private memorial service is being planned. In Frank’s memory, we encourage you to give a little extra to your grocery check-out person, to your sanitation worker, and to anyone else who is helping you and your loved ones survive this difficult time.
