Obituary for Antoinette Crimi (Cappuccio)

Antoinette Crimi ( Cappuccio)

Antoinette was born August 5 1926 on the second floor of Cappuccio’s Meats in The Italian Market where her parents, Domenico and Caterina Cappuccio, immigrants from Italy, had a small family butcher shop.

Known as “Mom” to her many customers, she attended Saint Paul’s School, was a proud graduate of Hallahan High School class of 1943 and Immaculata University, class of 1947.

Following College she taught school at Saint Paul’s and she married Harry at Saint Paul’s in November of 1948.

She raised a family of 4 children all the while working side by side in the family business with Harry and her father by day and in the evening helping him in his accounting practice at home.

She was very involved in her children’s schools helping out with events, fairs and even typing her children’s term papers late into the night.

As her father was in his later years, she was his caretaker and at the same time caring for her first born grandchild who was living with her for many years, bringing them along with her to the butcher shop.

As the family was growing, she loved to spend time with the grandchildren at the family’s shore house in Ventnor NJ.

She was an Italian Market stalwart where she was well known among many of her old students and her customers who loved to see her tying the sausages and later just sitting in her chair.

She leaves behind a legacy that will be hard to replace, many families, both local and in New Jersey many of whom were her husband’s family.

The last five months were the longest time she was apart from her husband in 75 years and her wish was to be reunited with him.

She passed peacefully with family by her side Thursday morning January 27th.

She will be missed by the many customers who knew her as “Mom” and whom she called her people, family when they stopped by, some just to see her smiling face.
